Plant and grow ginger yourself - how it works
Although ginger is native to Asia, you can also plant and grow it yourself in Germany. With home-grown ginger, cooking spicy dishes or preparing special teas and shakes is much more fun. This practical tip shows you how to properly grow ginger.
How to plant ginger yourself
We show you how to grow ginger yourself and what you should consider when planting and caring for it, so that you can also succeed in exotic plants. That's how it works:
- Find a sunny spot for your ginger in spring. Greenhouses or a very sunny window sill are best suited. If you provide adequate protection against too much moisture, you can also plant the ginger on the balcony or terrace.
- Buy a ginger bulb from the supermarket. Make sure that it is particularly firm.
- It is best to cut the tuber at a vegetation point, similar to potatoes. The ginger plant then grows from these "eyes". It is important that you choose a vegetation point, because this is where the cells divide, which is essential for plant growth. You can also cut the plant into strips about five centimeters long with vegetation points if you want to plant several pots. You can now germinate the tuber or strips overnight by placing them in warm water. However, this is not a must.
- Fill a pot with potting soil and put the ginger in it. Make sure that the cut areas point downwards and then cover the plant lightly with soil.
- It's best to put cling film over the flowerpot and help the plant to germinate. However, remove the film when you can already see the first germs.
You should keep this in mind when growing ginger
There are a number of things you should consider to ensure that the tropical plants are particularly successful. We'll show you what that is.
- Water the plants regularly, but not too much. The potting soil of ginger must not be really wet, otherwise your plant will start to rot. It is best to fill a spray bottle with lime-free water and moisten the plant daily.
- Only harvest the young ginger tubers. You can recognize them by their smooth surface and the lighter color. You can harvest these tubers for the first time in around eight to ten months.
- Make sure that the ginger plant is in a sunny place, but is not exposed to direct sunlight. This is especially important in summer. You should overwinter the ginger in a bright and cool place, in spring you have to repot the plants.
- Since the plants reach heights of up to 120 centimeters, you should stick branches in the ground to help the plants grow.
