Inkscape: Vectorize image - how it works
In order to be able to scale an image infinitely without losing any noticeable quality, you have to vectorize it. The Inkscape program offers you a free option to convert any image into a vector graphic. In this practical tip, we will show you how this step works.
Vectorize image with Inkscape
Although the basic vectorization is done with just a few steps, you should still take the time to optimize the result.
- First import your picture via "File -> Import".
- Select the picture and click on "Path" in the top menu bar.
- There you select the option "Trace bitmap".
- In the new window, there are now several options available for you to vectorize the image.
- Select either "Switch off brightness", "Edge detection" or "Color quantization". You have to find out for yourself which mode is best for your picture. The "live preview", which you can activate using a checkbox, will help you with this.
- In the sample image you can see how the different modes affect the image.
- After the image has been vectorized, you can continue to edit and color the individual fades in order to obtain an optimal result. You can use the shortcut [Ctrl] + [L] to simplify the paths.
In the next practical tip we will explain how you can create a completely new vector graphic in Inkscape.
