Intel wireless display - what is it?
What is Apple Airplay is Intel Wireless Display. In this practical tip you will find out what is behind the technology and what you need for it.
Wireless display - what's behind it?
Intel Wireless Display (WiDi for short) is a technology that allows you to wirelessly transfer your current image to another device. For example, you can watch presentations or videos on your television.
- You can only use WiDi if your laptop or tablet has at least one 3rd generation Intel Core processor and an Intel n-WLAN module. Of course you also need the right drivers for your device.
- First of all, your WLAN module must support the standard: in some devices, the receiver is already installed in the television. Alternatively, you can upgrade the standard yourself with an Intel adapter.
- So far, the Intel WiDi only works on Windows 7 and 8.
- With WiDi, 1080p video signals including 5.1 sound can be transmitted. Copy protection HDCP has also been supported since the second version, meaning that blurays and DVDs can be transferred.
- Because WiDi is only supported by a very small group of devices, Intel has decided to support the more widespread Miracast standard. Since Miracast and WiDi are technically very similar, only a software update is necessary.
Stream Android screen to TV via Miracast
Even more is possible with WiDi: With the adapter "Netgear: Push2TV" you can not only stream your laptop screen to the TV via WiDi, but also your smartphone screen. You can automatically connect the devices to each other using "AllShare Cast". We have presented the adapter in more detail on the CHIP homepage.
