Internet via cable connection: comparison of providers
There is nowhere near as many providers for Internet that comes from the television cable as for broadband DSL. In this comparison, we show you cable Internet providers where there are no volume restrictions, but there is more speed than with conventional DSL. However, the technology is not yet available everywhere - even in large cities like Berlin.
1. Kabel Deutschland - the market leader in cable internet
Kabel Deutschland is the most widespread cable internet provider in Germany. On the homepage you can immediately test whether cable internet is available at your place of residence.
- Best price: "Internet & Telefon 10". The cheapest offer starts at 9.90 euros in the first six months for an internet flat rate. Then you pay 19.90 euros for a maximum download speed of ten Mbit per second. This is less than with DSL. Included is a free flat rate for the fixed network in the first three months. Then it costs 5 euros extra.
- Most expensive tariff: "Internet & Telephone 100". Here it is up to six times faster than DSL to cable Internet. A maximum download speed of 100 Mbit / s is promised. For the upload, it is 6 Mbit / s. The combined landline and internet flat rate costs you as a new customer 19.90 euros in the first twelve months. After that, however, it becomes even more expensive at 39.90 euros than at many DSL providers.
- Combination packages: If you also use Kabel Deutschland for television, the company offers combination packages. These range from EUR 24.90 for the first 24 months with 25 Mbit / s download speed, landline flat rate and cable connection, to EUR 39.90 for the first twelve months of the Premium 100 package. Then it gets more expensive for both: 34.90 euros and 59.90 euros.
- Distribution: Kabel Deutschland covers thirteen federal states - all except Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg.
2. Unitymedia - local cable internet provider for Hessen & NRW
Unitymedia is a local cable internet provider. The company offers various online benefits, which promise up to € 180 price advantage depending on the tariff:
- Cheapest tariff: "Internet 50". For € 23 a month you get a pure internet flat rate with download speeds of up to 50 Mbit / s and an upload of up to 2.5 Mbit / s. Telephone and television are not included.
- Most expensive tariff: The "3play Premium 150" with up to 150 Mbit / s down and up to five Mbit / s upload speed costs you 43 euros per month in the first twelve months, then 50 euros. The classic triple play includes a telephone as a landline flat rate, an internet flat rate and television in HD.
- Distribution: Unitymedia is only available in the federal states of Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia.
3. Kabel BW - the cable internet provider for Baden-Württemberg
Kabel BW is a local cable internet provider:
- Cheapest tariff: "Internet 50". For € 23 a month, you get a pure internet flat rate. A cable connection is - as with the other cable Internet providers - not necessary. The download speeds are up to 50 Mbit / s and for the upload up to 2.5 Mbit / s.
- Most expensive tariff: "3play Premium 150". For 40 euros in the first twelve months and then 47 euros you get the "Triple Play" with up to 150 Mbit / s down and up to 5 Mbit / s upload speed as well as a landline flat rate and cable TV in HD.
- Combo packages: The "2 combo 128 + cable TV HD" including a telephone with a landline flat rate costs you 54.98 euros in the first year and then 64.98 euros.
- Distribution: Kabel BW is only responsible for Baden-Württemberg.
4. Telecolumbus
Telecolumbus is headquartered in Berlin and taken over by Unitymedia:
- The cheapest tariff: "Internet 16" is a pure Internet flat rate. As a new customer, you will receive this free of charge in the first three months; after that it costs 17.99 euros per month. A download speed of up to 16 MBit / s and an upload of up to 1 MB / s still correspond to DSL levels. You get a landline flat rate for just two euros more.
- The most expensive tariff: "Internet 128" offers up to 128 Mbit / s download speed and up to 4 Mbit / s upload. Changers receive the tariff free of charge in the first six months; after that it costs 39.99 euros a month.
- Distribution: Telecolumbus is particularly common in eastern Germany and also in some parts of Berlin.
Conclusion: Not much choice with the Internet cable
- With cable internet you are sometimes much faster than with DSL. For comparison: 1 GB of films with 125 Mbit / s Internet cable only needs 55 seconds to download. With 100 Mbit / s Internet cable, it is 1 minute and 23 seconds; with VDSL with 50 MBit / s already 2 minutes and 47 seconds and finally with DSL with 16 MBit / s 10 minutes. The speed improvement is particularly noticeable if you like to use multimedia streaming services.
- However, in most regions you have no choice when it comes to cable providers. You can only choose the right tariff yourself.
