Internet Explorer has stopped working. What to do?
In the practical tip, we explain what you can do when Internet Explorer stops working.
Internet Explorer not working? - Start browser without add-ons
Browser add-ons can improve the effectiveness of browsing and increase comfort. On the other hand, you can also cause conflicts with other software. Therefore, start Internet Explorer without add-ons to find out whether the problem is caused by it. And this is how it works:
- Click on the Windows start button, navigate to "All Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "System Tools" and select "Internet Explorer (without add-ons)".
- If Internet Explorer works smoothly without add-ons, an add-on will cause the problems.
- Deactivate all add-ons in the add-on manager. To do this, start Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" and select "Add-Ons". Here you can deactivate the add-ons manually. If necessary, switch some of them back on to find out which of them is responsible for the malfunction of the IE.
Reset Internet Explorer to default settings
If the problem is not caused by add-ons, you can try resetting Internet Explorer to its default settings. All changes that you have made to Internet Explorer since the installation will be undone - your favorites and feeds remain unaffected.
- Close all windows of Windows and Internet Explorer.
- Start Internet Explorer.
- Click on "Tools" and select: "Internet Options".
- Go to the "Expand" tab, click "Reset", then click "Reset" again.
- Click "Close" and confirm with "OK".
- Restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect.
Check the computer for malware
Viruses or malware can also cause browser problems. Have your computer checked for malware by an antivirus program. If you don't have a virus program installed, you can take a look at AVG Free Antivirus or Avast! Throw Free Antivirus.
Update Internet Explorer
Basically, it is always advisable to keep Internet Explorer up to date, as updates fix the security gaps and system files are renewed.
- Right click on "Computer" and select "Properties".
- Select "Windows Update" at the bottom left to go to the Windows Update Center. All Windows updates are offered here, including patches and new versions of Internet Explorer.
- Alternatively, you can manually download and install the latest version of Internet Explorer. You can always find them here.
Update IE driver
Broken or outdated drivers can also cause Internet Explorer to malfunction. Therefore, you should update your drivers if necessary. More information about repairing and updating drivers can be found here.
