Internet Explorer hangs on startup
If Internet Explorer freezes on startup, this may be due to an incompatible toolbar. We explain what you can do to get the browser up and running again.
Remove Internet Explorer addons by Safe-Mode
If you recently installed a toolbar, add-on, or other extension for Internet Explorer, this extension may cause the browser to crash. With just a few steps, you can deactivate the annoying extension and use Internet Explorer again.
- Select "Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "System Tools" -> "Internet Explorer (without add-ons)" from the start menu. Internet Explorer can also be in another folder. However, it is important that you start the version "without add-ons".
- Click on "Tools" -> "Internet Options". If no menu bar can be seen, display it by pressing the "ALT key".
- Select the "Programs" tab and then click on "Manage Add-ons".
- Select the last installed add-on and click "Deactivate". Then close the window by clicking "OK".
Reset Internet Explorer to default settings
If you have not installed any new add-ons or Internet Explorer still does not start after deactivating all plugins, reset the IE to the default settings. However, all previously set settings are deleted.
- Press the key combination "Windows + R".
- Enter the command "inetcpl.cpl" in the empty field and then click on "Execute".
- Switch to the "Advanced" tab.
- Click on "Reset" or in older versions on "Restore Defaults"
- In the next window, click "Reset" again.
- Uncheck "Delete personal settings" and then click "OK".
- Close all windows after the process is complete.
- Internet Explorer should work again.
By the way: You can also completely remove Internet Explorer from Windows if you want to switch to an alternative browser.
