iOS 11: 7 hidden features you need to know
iOS 11 brings numerous hidden features to your iPhone. We present the 7 best of them.
1. Siri learns to read
Who doesn't know the problem: you ask the language assistant something - and he doesn't understand what he said.
- In iOS 11 you can now correct Siri in writing. If the question or command is not displayed correctly, use the keyboard to improve Siri.
- Siri reads the correction and can give the desired answer or execute the command correctly.
2. Personalized Control Center
If the Control Center was previously quite practical for quick access to certain functions, you can adapt the Center in iOS 11 to your requirements.
- If you open the Control Center as usual via "Settings> Control Center", the new item "Apply" appears since iOS 11.
- Below you will find additional functions that you can activate for the control center. All you have to do is tap the green plus sign behind the desired function.
- You cannot remove permanently installed functions, but you can add useful shortcuts to the control center as you wish.
3. Screen recording in the Control Center
Long awaited and finally here: Screen recording for iPhone and iPad.
- The new control center not only offers the possibility to adapt it to your requirements. The screen recording feature is also new.
- If you activate this feature in the control center, you can now not only take screenshots with iOS 11, but also record the screen.
4. Edit screenshots right away
You create a screenshot in iOS 11 as well as in all other operating system versions beforehand: By pressing the Home and Power buttons simultaneously.
- What is new, however, is that the screenshot is not immediately stored in the picture folder. It appears for a few seconds in a small window at the bottom left of the screen. You can also take multiple screenshots in a row.
- If you tap on it, the screenshot can be edited as required.
- If you want to save the screenshot unprocessed, you do not need to do anything else: after a few seconds the preview window disappears and the display photo is automatically saved in your picture library.
5. Emergency mode with Emergency SOS
A useful feature has been integrated with iOS 11 emergency mode.
- If you press the power button five times in quick succession, a screen with sliders appears. With these you can either make an emergency call or call predefined family members.
- But it is even faster: In the "Settings" you will find the new item "Emergency SOS". Below this, you can only enter emergency contacts such as family members in the Health app. If you activate the automatic call function, you no longer have to operate the slider on the emergency call screen yourself.
- With the "Countdown" setting, you determine after how many seconds the emergency call should be made automatically when the emergency call screen is opened. This prevents, for example, an unwanted emergency call if you accidentally call up the SOS screen.
6. Spotlight with handwriting recognition
This feature should be particularly interesting for iPad users.
- If you write something handwritten in Notes, you only need to remember roughly what you wrote.
- You can now find the note again via Spotlight even if it was written by hand: simply let the tool search for the written words.
7. Camera with QR code scanner
Previously, you had to use special apps to scan QR codes, but they are now superfluous in iOS 11.
- The camera app in iOS 11 no longer simply takes pictures or videos. A QR scanner was integrated.
Easily share complicated Wi-Fi password
- Passwords should generally not be shared. You can of course make an exception if close friends want to use your WLAN at home. Of course, you wisely chose a complicated password that is not that easy to crack.
- If your iPhone is switched on and someone wants to use your Wi-Fi network, you will receive a notification on the screen. If you tap "Send password", the other person can use the network without having to type in a cumbersome password.
- In addition to devices with iOS 11, this feature also works with macOS High Sierra. In addition to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth must also be switched on.
Save websites as PDF
- If you would like to save a website as a PDF, you will find the corresponding function in Safari under the share button at the bottom of the screen. Scroll to the right until you find the "Create PDF" option.
- However, you can not only save the website as a PDF, but also write down thoughts about it or highlight areas, for example with arrows. The next screen shows a small marker symbol in the top right corner. If you tap on it, you can make notes about the PDF.
Disable annoying double tone on messages
If you have received a message, you will be informed with an advisory tone.
$config[ads_text5] not found- If you do not open the message immediately, you will be reminded by another warning tone after a short time. If this double tone annoys you, you can deactivate it in iOS 11.
- Open the settings and there you will find "Messages". If you open it and scroll all the way down, you can deactivate the double tone under "Repeat notes". Simply choose "Never".
- Of course, you can also be advised of a new message more often. In this setting you have the option of having the tone repeated up to ten times.
Before switching to iOS11, you should check to make sure that your apps are compatible. We have the most important information in another article for you.
