With iOS 11, Apple brings a few improvements in terms of data protection for iPhone and iPad. We'll show you what additional options you have to protect your privacy.
iOS 11: Curious apps
So far it has not been possible to deactivate the location service for certain apps. iOS 11 allows for the first time an individual setting, who you want to allow access to your location and who not.
- The setting already existed in iOS 10, but it was not a requirement for app developers. For example, some apps carried out a location survey without the option to switch off.
- Since iOS 11, however, this setting option has become mandatory for all developers. A hint at installation alone is no longer sufficient. Apple has obliged the app makers to always offer three options for data protection.
- The respective selection can be found under "Settings> Data protection> Location services". The options are shown behind each app.
- You have the choice between "Always", "Never" and also the restriction "When using the app"
iOS 11: Cross-site tracking in Safari
Cross-site tracking is usually used by advertisers to place personalized advertising or to always show the same advertising on different pages. For this purpose, so-called tracking cookies are installed in websites, which recognize which pages the user visits.
- With iOS 11, Apple now offers the option of preventing cross-site tracking in the Safari browser by automatically recognizing and deleting the tracking cookies.
- In the settings in the Safari submenu you will find the "Try to Prevent Cross-Site Tracking" option, which you can activate if desired.
- When you translate this, it means "try to prevent cross-site tracking". Safari cannot guarantee that cross-site tracking will be prevented. But at least it is tried.
