iOS 11 offers users numerous new options to optimize their iPhone or iPad. We present an overview of the most important features.
Images come alive and cost less storage
iOS 11 offers many new effects that make pictures and videos appear more vivid.
- Cool features include endless loops, long exposure or loops.
- This can be applied to the live photos afterwards.
- In addition, thanks to a new compression technology, they should use less storage space, but the quality should remain the same.
Improved control center
The Control Center has been around for a while - more precisely since iOS 7 - but so far there has been no way to personalize the Control Center.
- With iOS 11 you can now also customize the control center and design it according to your wishes and needs.
- For example, you can add, move or remove settings.
Screen recording possible with iOS 11
Many users have long wanted this feature - with iOS 11 it is finally here: screen recording.
- You can activate the function for the control center and then quickly and easily record your iPhone screen.
More safety on the road
Previously, you could only set certain times for the Do Not Disturb feature.
- You have more options since iOS 11. For example, you can manually activate the "Do not disturb while driving" feature via the control center.
- The setting works even easier if you have switched on the automatic mode: Your iPhone then recognizes movements that are typical for a car trip and automatically activates the "Do not disturb" function.
- However, the cell phone cannot distinguish whether you are a driver or a passenger. So if you are sitting in the passenger seat, you must first confirm that you are not driving yourself in automatic mode.
Emergency mode with Emergency SOS
A little hidden, but certainly useful: The emergency mode in iOS 11.
- This enables you to make an emergency call or notify family members in a dangerous situation.
- There are several ways to get there: a screen with a slider appears when you press the power button five times in quick succession.
- You can even shorten the process by activating the automatic call function. In the settings you will find the new item "Emergency SOS". Enter your emergency contacts here in the Health app and activate the automatic call function. You no longer have to operate the slider on the emergency call screen yourself.
- To ensure that the iPhone knows after how many seconds the emergency call should be made when the SOS screen is open and that an emergency call is not inadvertently made, set the time period for this with the "Countdown" setting.
- Incidentally, users in the beta version of iOS 11 discovered a trick on how to use the emergency mode to temporarily switch off the Touch ID on the iPhone.
More protection for your data
Data protection has been significantly improved in iOS 11.
- You can now set individually for each app whether you allow the location service or not.
- The operating system also offers the option of preventing cross-site tracking in Safari.
- We will explain in a separate practical tip how you can improve data protection on your iPhone.
Darkmode in iOS 11
This mode is particularly pleasant in low light conditions.
- A dark mode is now also available under iOS 11. You can activate this via your settings.
Changes also in the Apple Store and at Siri
Apple is also missing out on a few innovations for its store and Siri.
- The Apple Store gets a new design. It is also subdivided into news, games and apps.
- The voice assistant Siri is also being revised: the computer voice should sound more human in the future. It can also translate spoken words directly into any language.
iOS 11 brings many innovations, but not all apps are up to date yet. We will explain in another practical tip how you can check whether your apps are compatible before switching to iOS 11.
