iOS 7.1: hotspot not working - what to do?
You have updated iOS to version 7.1 and your personal hotspot no longer works? Here you can find out why and what you can do.
iOS update 7.1 contains a hotspot bug
Many iPhone users complain in Apple forums that their personal hotspot no longer works after the update to iOS 7.1. The reason for this is now known: iOS 7.1 contains a bug. This can delete all of your APN settings. New ones cannot be saved either, so that your personal hotspot no longer works. What is known about the bug so far:
- The problem appears to mainly occur to users who have updated from iOS 7.0.6 to iOS 7.1.
- All iPhone versions can be affected, including the current flagship 5s.
- A striking number of iPhone 4 users report the hotspot bug in the Apple forum.
- You can try to set up your device again. This is said to have helped in some cases. However, no workaround is currently known (mid / end of March 2014).
- The worst thing is that Apple refers to the mobile operators and they in turn see the error at Apple. In short: nobody feels responsible.
- It is speculated that only iPhone customers of certain providers who have no contract with Apple to officially support tethering are affected.
What is APN?
APN stands for 'Access Point Name'. This is required to establish a mobile internet connection.

Unfortunately, there is hardly an update without problems. So also iOS 7.1, which brings new bugs with cool new functions like CarPlay. These should be fixed in a patch. At the current time (March 20, 2014), however, no release date is known yet.
