iPad 2/3/4: Change the battery - how it works
If the battery of your iPad 2, 3 or 4 is broken or only lasts a few hours, you can change it yourself. In addition to the spare part, you only need a little tact and must not have two left hands. The instructions for an exchange can be found here step by step.
Preparation for the battery replacement on the iPad 2/3/4
- Repairing the battery of an iPad 4 costs the specialist around 80 euros. If you carry out the procedure yourself, you can usually get by far below 50 euros.
- For repairs, you not only need the battery, but also the right tools. The following tool set is already available for around 11 euros on Amazon and has everything you need.
- Use only plastic tools in the following instructions, unless something else is recommended. But you should also always handle the plastic tool carefully to avoid damage.
Step 1: open iPad 2/3/4
- First, take a hair dryer at hand, set it to a not too high level and use it to warm the edge of the display. The edge of the iPad should then be warm, hold the hair dryer for a maximum of one minute and not too close to the iPad.
- Take the elongated plastic tool at hand and insert it between the housing and the display. Start at the top right and work your way down.
- Press the flat area into the gap and move the tool up and down again and again with small lifting movements. A first gap opens after just a few seconds. If this is not the case, pick up the hair dryer again.
- If you have one side open, take the plastic pick and carefully push it into the gap. Then open the other side of the iPad.
- When all sides are detached, fold the glass from the display to the left. But be careful: the glass on the bottom left is still connected to the iPad via a cable.
- Unscrew all four screws from the touch screen and also fold it away to the left. Place the small screws in as safe a place as possible. It's hard to find you on the floor.
Step 2: Detach the display and glass from the iPad 2/3/4
- There is still a large cable on the touch screen. If you look for the end of the cable, you will see a folding switch there. Lift the switch with a plastic tool and carefully pull out the cable.
- The glass from the iPad is connected right next door via a similar cable. Here, however, you have to open two toggle switches. At the bottom left you can see a thin cable that connects the home button. Carefully pry the plug connection out of the iPad. You can then remove the display.
- There is another flat cable right next to the cable from the glass. Remove this cable too. On some models, the cable is glued to the bottom. Be especially careful here.
- At the bottom left next to the power connector is an elongated, black placeholder. You can simply pry it out. Remove the two screws on the power connection from the inside and loosen the cable connected to them on the left.
- Disconnect the last two plugs in the lower left corner. You do not need to remove them. Now you can completely remove the mainboard (the large silver area to the left of the battery) from the iPad after loosening all 4 screws.
Step 3: replace the battery on the iPad 2/3/4
- The iPad battery is now completely free. It consists of three areas. On the left and right on the long sides of the areas, there are adhesive strips. In total, you have to remove six adhesive strips.
- To do this, turn the iPad over and heat the back of the iPad. The iPad should not get hot here either, but the warmer it is, the easier it is to remove the adhesive.
- Take the flat metal tool in hand and slide it under the battery in the place of an adhesive strip. If the battery is removed, stick in the new one. To reassemble the iPad, follow the instructions in reverse order.
