iPad: The best pens for writing and drawing
You can use the iPad not only with your fingers, but also with special pens for drawing and writing. Below you will find out what offers are available and whether the Apple Pencil is really the best option.
iPad pens: Apple's writing and drawing options
Since 2015, Apple has introduced its pen called Apple Pencil for the brand's own tablets. In the meantime, the second version of this has been released. But the compatibility is not the same for both. The differences briefly summarized:
- The first generation Apple Pencil: This is compatible with the iPad Pro models of the first and second generations and the iPad of the sixth generation. The range of functions is limited, for example, by the lack of shortcuts. The pen is connected and charged by plugging it into the iPad. The pen is still very accurate and sensitive to pressure. If the first generation Apple Pencil is compatible with your iPad, make a good choice despite the high price of 95 euros.
- The second generation Apple Pencil: So far this is only compatible with the 11 "iPad Pro and the 12.9" iPad Pro of the third generation. In addition, there was a price increase to 135 euros. But you get an Apple Pencil that is comfortable in the hand and has an appealing matt look. In addition, the charging and connection technology has been improved. Now the pen is simply kept in place by magnets on the side of the iPad - it holds even when shaken gently - and charges on the side. If you want to use it, simply remove it from the iPad and start writing. In addition, the pen can be operated with shortcuts by double-tapping on the flat side. For example, you can switch between the pen and the eraser in the Notes app. The accuracy and sensitivity to pressure of the pen have also been improved.
iPad pens: Other offers for drawing and writing
If your iPad is not compatible with the first or second generation Apple Pencil or you don't want to spend that much money, there are other options:
- Adonit Pixel: This Apple Pencil alternative is around 70 euros, but offers two buttons for setting shortcuts. The pen recognizes the pressure and the incline exactly. In addition, the compatibility is very high and can also be used on the iPhone: all devices from iPad mini, iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro, to the iPhone can be used with the pen. The Adonit Pixel is connected to the device via Bluetooth.
- Adonit Pro: This is the little brother of the Adonit Pixel and costs around 30 euros. If you're looking for an easy-to-use pen, you've come to the right place. It does not have to be connected to the device and is therefore compatible with every device. As a result, the Adonit Pro has no batteries and therefore does not need to be charged. Despite the simple technique, the pen is a good alternative if you don't want to spend that much money.
Conclusion: pens for writing and drawing on the iPad
- The second generation Apple Pencil is definitely the best option if you have the latest iPad. It can be operated very intuitively and is elegant and comfortable to hold thanks to the typical Apple design.
- If your iPad is not compatible with it, the Adonit Pixel is certainly the best option for professional users. With the additional buttons, this pen also makes working much easier.
- If you only need a pen to write short notes, the Adonit Pro is recommended. This is inexpensive and is sufficient for fast recordings.
- The first generation Apple Pencil is characterized by its accuracy and sensitivity to pressure. But the pen is not as comfortable to hold as the more advanced version. When charging, there is also the risk that the pen's Lightning connector breaks off, since it has to be inserted vertically into the iPad.
