Make iPad child-proof: how it works
Let your children use your iPad if you make the device childproof. We'll show you how it's done.
1. Code lock for the iPad
If your child should only use the iPad when you are also present, it is advisable to set up a code lock.
- Open the Settings app on your iPad and select the "General" menu item.
- Here you will find the "Code lock" item. Click on "Activate code" there.
- Then enter a code and repeat it.
- Under "Request code" you can also determine whether the code should be requested immediately after the screen lock or only after a certain time.
2. Activate guided access on the iPad
You can open a specific app via guided access. If you want to leave it again, you have to enter a code first. This way your child cannot access any other apps. You can also block certain areas within the app:
- Open the Settings app and select the "General" menu item.
- Under "Accessibility" you will find the "Guided Access" that you have to activate.
- For example, if you start a game app, click the home button three times in a row. The guided access then starts.
- The opened window is slightly reduced. If you wish, you can circle a specific area here that your child should not have access to. For example, areas with in-app purchases can be blocked. You can also deactivate touch and movement of the tablet using the "Options" button. This is useful, for example, if you want your child to watch a film.
- To activate the mode, click on "Start" in the top right corner. The first time you have to enter a new code and confirm it.
- If you want to deactivate the mode again, click the Home button three times and enter the code.
3. Activate childproof lock with restrictions
If your child is to be able to move freely in the system and can open several apps independently, it is recommended to activate the restrictions.
- To activate the restrictions, open the Settings app, select the "General" menu item and open the "Restrictions" there. First enter a code here and confirm it.
- In the top category "Allow" you can deny access to some apps such as the camera or iTunes.
- In addition, age ratings for apps and games can be set, and changes in certain apps can be allowed or denied. You can also prohibit in-app purchases.
- You can find detailed step-by-step instructions for activating and configuring the child lock in this practical tip.
