iPad: software update hangs - what to do?
If your iPad hangs during a software update, there can be many reasons. We show you how to get the problem under control and how to successfully update your device.
iPad update hangs: Soft reset to the new iOS version
Before trying any of the solutions below, give your iPad enough time. The process can take up to half an hour or longer, especially with large iOS updates. Here it often looks as if the update is hanging, in fact an installation step only takes longer than usual.
- If the progress bar does not move after a long time or the Apple logo does not disappear, you can carry out a soft reset.
- To do this, hold down the home and sleep buttons on your iPad for around 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
- Your device will now restart and continue the update from the previous point.
Alternatively: bypass stubborn iPad update with iTunes
If your iPad still hangs after the soft reset, only a restore with iTunes will help. In this way, you will fix all errors, but you will also lose your data, unless you have created a backup beforehand.
- Since your iPad is no longer responding normally, you need to put it in DFU mode for iTunes to recognize the device. To do this, switch off your iPad and connect it to the computer using a USB cable.
- Then start the latest iTunes version on your computer.
- Now it's back to the tablet: Hold the home and sleep button pressed for around 10 seconds. During this time, the Apple logo should appear and disappear again.
- As soon as the 10 seconds have passed, release the power button, but continue to press the home button.
- The message "iTunes has detected an iPad in maintenance status" should appear in iTunes after a few seconds. You can now release the home button.
- Finally, click the "Restore iPad" button in iTunes and wait for the software update. Depending on the size of the update and the speed of your internet connection, this step can take a long time.
- Then you can either set up your tablet again or import a backup.
