iPhone 6s charging socket: How to change the Lightning connector
If your charging socket on the Apple iPhone 6s is defective, you can change it yourself. In cooperation with iDoc, we will tell you exactly how to do this in this practical tip.
iPhone 6s: Change tool to charging socket
- To ensure that the charging socket can be replaced without any problems, you need the right tool and a new Lightning connector. All parts are available from iDoc.
- In addition, you need a hot air dryer or an ordinary hair dryer for replacement or repair.
- Below we explain how to proceed when replacing the charging socket.
Step 1: turn off iPhone
- First of all, you should switch off the iPhone so that there is no short circuit or the like during work.
- To do this, press and hold the [Power] button for about five seconds until you see the shutdown logo on the screen.
- Then swipe this logo from left to right to turn off iPhone completely.
- Wait until the display is completely off before you start the following work.
Step 2: remove housing screws
- Now you can get started. First, start by removing the housing screws next to the charging socket.
- For this you need the pentalobe screwdriver from the tool set mentioned above.
- Tip: put the screws aside and mark them so that they cannot be mixed up later.
Step 3: Carefully lift up the display
- Now take the suction cup at hand and place it approximately at the height of the home button.
- Then use the hot air dryer to heat the sides of the display so that the adhesive comes off. Try to carefully lift the display with the suction cup.
- The plastic pick can help. If the display is difficult to lift or cannot be lifted at all, you must continue to heat it up.
Step 4: remove the battery contacts
- After you have lifted the display and carefully folded it to the side, you must now disconnect the contacts from the battery.
- You will need the Philips screwdriver for this. Loosen the two screws and place them separately. Then remove the cover.
- Then you have to carefully lift the plug using the spudger so that it detaches from the contact. Alternatively, you can use your fingernails.
Step 5: release the display contacts
- At the top left you will find four screws from the display contact. Loosen them with the Philips screwdriver and pack them all apart from the top screw. Then remove the cover.
- There are three plugs underneath, which you have to release gradually as follows: Start with the plug on the right, followed by the upper plug. Finally remove the plug on the left side.
- Use the tip of the spudger to remove the connectors. Be extremely careful when doing this.
- Take the tip of the spudger back and remove the flex cable and the antenna cable from the logic board. Be very careful again.
Step 6: remove the Taptic Engine
- Here you need the Philips screwdriver to remove the two screws.
- Then remove the entire Taptic Engine from the housing. Be very careful when doing this.
Step 7: remove speaker
- There is a black sticker next to the Lightning socket. Loosen it and set it aside.
- Below are five Philips screws, all of which you must loosen. Put them in separate compartments so you don't mix them up.
- Carefully slide the antenna cable there aside and then remove the speaker.
Step 8: remove Lightning connector
- To loosen the Lightning Connector, you must first loosen eight screws with the Philips screwdriver. You should also keep these separately.
- Then remove the small black plastic piece next to the charging socket. Then carefully go under the small black cable and use the spatula to detach it from the floor.
- Then use the spudger to loosen the headphone jack and the Lightning connector and the two golden microphones so that you can carefully remove the flat cable.
Step 9: attach lightning connector
- Replace the small piece of plastic next to the Lightning socket.
- Fasten the new Lightning connector with the eight screws.
Step 10: assemble iPhone
- After the change is successfully completed, you can now reassemble the iPhone. Start by putting the speaker back in place and plugging it in. Screw it tight and stick the black sticker back onto the speaker.
- Then connect the Lightning Connector and the antenna correctly again.
- Place the Taptic Engine in the iPhone and screw it in with the corresponding screws.
- Then, for safety, replace the cover for the connector and screw it down.
- Now it's about connecting the display. First connect the right, then the upper and finally the left connector. Then test whether all functions of the iPhone work.
- Then connect the battery contact to the logic board and screw it on with the appropriate screws.
- Then flip the display over and gently squeeze it until you can hear it click into place.
- Finally, tighten the two screws next to the charging socket.
