iTunes: Create local iPhone backup
As an alternative to the local backup, you can also perform an iCloud backup. Both variants have their advantages and disadvantages. If necessary, you can create a backup in iTunes as well as in iCloud. In another practical tip, we will show you the respective advantages and disadvantages of iPhone backups. You create a local backup as follows:
- Start iTunes on your Windows PC or Mac.
- Now connect your iPhone to the computer using a USB cable.
- When connecting to the computer for the first time, you have to confirm the access request of the computer on your iPhone.
- After a short wait you will find the iPhone as a button in the top left of iTunes.
- Now activate the item "This computer" under the category "Backups".
- If desired: With the "Encrypt iPhone backup" option, you can also backup the backup with a password. Note: Passwords for accounts and your data from the Health app can only be saved with encryption in the backup. If you do not want to encrypt your backup, you can skip this point.
- With the "Create backup now" button, your data is backed up on your computer from your iPhone.
- Once the first backup has been created, use the "Back up now" button to update the backup.
- Above you can see the progress of the backup. Depending on the number and size of the files to be backed up, this process can take a few minutes.
Restore iPhone from iTunes backup
- Once you have created a backup, you can restore it at any time. You will also find the "Restore backup" button in the "Backups" category.
- If you bought a new iPhone or reset your current iPhone to the factory settings, you can also import the backup. If you start iTunes, you will be offered the backup directly.
- Note: A backup is always connected to the respective iOS version. For example, if you created a backup on iOS 12, you cannot use it on an iPhone that already uses iOS 13.
