IOS 11 introduced a battery status indicator on iPhone. In this practical tip, we explain what the function is for and how you use it.
Check the battery status of the iPhone
The "Battery status" function can be found in the system settings of your iPhone. To do this, go to "Battery" in the settings and then to "Battery status". The function is only available for the iPhone 6 and subsequent generations. You will not find the menu item on older iPhones and on the iPad.
- Basically, two pieces of information are displayed in the battery state: the remaining maximum battery capacity and information on the maximum performance of the iPhone.
- The battery in the iPhone - like in any other smartphone - is a wear part that loses performance bit by bit. Every battery is subject to chemical aging and must be replaced at some point. Apple itself states that a battery usually has a remaining capacity of around 80 percent after 500 charging cycles. In practice, this means that the battery of your iPhone will discharge more quickly if you use it the same way.
- The maximum performance of the battery decreases with increasing age. This is relevant if you temporarily cause high energy consumption on your iPhone - for example through complex games, the activated LED flashlight or the like. A cold ambient temperature also creates additional stress.
- If the battery can no longer supply the iPhone with sufficient power, the device crashes. You will then see a corresponding message in the battery status (see screenshot).
- The so-called battery power management in the iPhone now means that a sudden shutdown in the future is avoided. But you have to expect a slight loss in performance. For example, apps may open a little slower, the screen may be slightly dimmed, or the volume may be lowered.
- If you do not want this, you can deactivate the battery power management manually. But then you have to reckon with the iPhone suddenly crashing again. If this happens all the time, you should have the battery replaced sooner or later.
- If you install a third-party battery in your iPhone yourself, you have to reckon with the "battery status" function not working correctly. This can only be ensured with original Apple spare parts.
