iPod Classic: Change the battery - how it works
It takes a lot of effort to change the battery on an iPod Classic, but it can be mastered with a little skill. Apple has unfortunately not provided an easily accessible battery compartment for its devices. So you have to open your iPod Classic to replace the battery. If you still want to carry out the repair yourself, this practical tip will show you how to do this.
You need to change the battery of the iPod Classic
You need a new, suitable battery and some special tools for this repair:
- Among other things, you should have a thin spatula about 4 cm wide. You also need other special tools made of plastic and metal.
- You can either buy them individually or as a set. If you only want to carry out repairs of this kind occasionally, you are well advised with a complete set.
Change the battery of the iPod Classic - in 10 steps
When repairing, be as careful as possible. Better take a little more time than rushing to make mistakes:
- First, make sure that the hold switch is in the locked position.
- You should have a little patience to open the iPod: a total of thirteen metal clips hold your device together. Carefully open the iPod Classic by using the special tool on the left side (view from the front) to penetrate the gap between the front and the back.
- Make sure that you do not bend the sheet metal of the housing too much. Be especially careful in the corners of the device. Under no circumstances should you bend the housing there!
- As soon as the back of the housing is loose, carefully disconnect the ribbon cables without tearing them. The cables are very sensitive and cannot be patched yourself.
- Now carefully fold the hard drive over. You will now come to the last ribbon cable that connects the headphone jack to the motherboard. Gently loosen the cable and free the housing cover.
- Some of the metal clips are definitely bent. Now bend it back. Otherwise you will not be able to connect the two halves of the housing together later. Make sure that you do not accidentally tear off the metal rail. Here are the clips that hold your iPod together.
- Now bend the rear housing shell back into shape. If the side walls are slightly bent outwards, you can now correct that.
- The battery itself is glued to the housing cover. You have to gently pry it out with the special tool. Be careful not to tear off the headphone jack or the hold switch. Take some Zet with this step.
- Position the new battery and plug in all ribbon cables before assembling the housing halves. Make sure that they sit well and are in contact.
- Finally, put the two halves of the case back together and start the iPod.
After the repair, you should completely re-set up your iPod. So the device works like on the first day. Read another practical tip on how to restore your iPod Classic.
