In this practical tip, we will show you how to find out and change the hard drive formatting of your iPod.
iPod: Find out the formatting of the hard disk
To determine the formatting of the iPod HDD, do the following:
- Start the settings on your iPod and select the "About" section.
- Scroll to the end. If your iPod hard drive is formatted in Mac, the last serial number is missing. If you have formatted them in Windows, "Format: Windows" appears at the bottom of the display.

- Download and install iTunes for Windows. Then connect the iPod to your PC.
- Open the update program, select "Restore" here and follow the instructions.
- After successful restoration, the iPod is formatted as "FAT32" and can be used with all Windows PCs.
Mac: How to properly format iPod
- Make sure you are using the latest version of iTunes.
- Connect iPod to your Mac and start iTunes.
- Select your iPod on the left and click the Summary tab at the top.
- To start formatting, click the "Restore" button.
- Confirm the following window and wait for the formatting to finish. You can then use the iPod on all Macs.
