iPod Touch: Change the battery - how it works
If the battery on iPod touch no longer works properly, you can change it yourself at any time. We will show you how the exchange works for the 4G, 5G and 6G models.
Preparation: Change the battery from the iPod touch
- Replacing the battery on the iPod touch is unfortunately not quite as easy as on an iPhone. Even if you have a little more than two left hands, the project is no child's play.
- To remove the battery, you always need a soldering iron. If you have no practical experience, you should first collect it or ask a friend.
- You also need suitable tools. The following tool set contains all tools and the five required screwdrivers.
iPod touch 5G / 6G: change battery
- The display is glued to the housing. To loosen the adhesive, gently heat the display with a hair dryer for around a minute. The glue should be warm and not hot.
- Place the suction cup above the home button and pull the display away from the housing. Alternatively, you can slide the pick between the display and the housing and thus loosen it. Caution: The display is still connected by cable.
- Now you can open the display on the cable upwards. If necessary, remove the thin frame on the iPod touch. You can also remove it if the display is still installed.
- Now loosen all 12 screws that frame the iPod on the left, right and below. If you then pry up the golden contact from the home button, the large silver plate can be removed.
- Here you can see the battery of the iPod touch. This is soldered on top and can only be loosened and reattached with a soldering iron. Since the battery is glued, carefully pry it out with the plastic tool.
- Once you have inserted and soldered the new battery, you can follow the instructions backwards. Be especially careful when closing iPod touch.
Instructions: Change the battery of the iPod touch 4G
Note: In the following instructions, many components are only loosened and not completely removed. A removal is not necessary here.
- Switch the device off completely and heat the display with a hair dryer. The adhesive should only be warm and not hot.
- Take the opening pick and slide it between the display and the housing at the bottom right. Now you can slowly release the display in all directions.
- Be extra careful now. The display is and remains connected to the back via a cable. Carefully fold up the display.
- Now loosen the 8 screws on the edge of the iPod. You will find four on the left, three below and one on the right. For this you need different screwdrivers.
- In the top right corner you will find a small silver plate. Carefully loosen them with the plastic tool.
- On the left side, at the level of the volume buttons, you will find an indentation within the large, silver plate. Place the plastic tool carefully here and lift the plate upwards.
- At the bottom right of the home button you will find a small, square component. Carefully pry out this component with the plastic tool. If you loosen the screw directly underneath, you can remove the entire component.
- Now it goes on above. At the top you will find a total of three screws, all of which you must loosen. Lift the previously released silver plate at the top right and lift the blue motherboard on the right side. On the left side, the main board remains connected with a cable.
- Now it goes to the speaker in the lower left. You can remove it from all sides with the plastic tool, it does not have to be removed.
- Now that all important areas have been loosened, you have access to the battery. This is glued to the housing and must therefore be carefully levered out. Use the plastic tool for this.
- Once the battery is disconnected, use the plastic tool to go to all four corners of the iPod touch. Loosen the complete assembly of components, including the battery, and fold it out of the housing to the left. Be careful not to disconnect the connection cable on the left and top.
- Remove the protective film from the back of the battery and remove the thin, yellow film on the battery. You have now uncovered the cable with which the battery hangs on the motherboard.
- Finally, you have to use a soldering iron to detach the battery from the circuit board and reattach the new battery. For assembly, you can simply follow these instructions backwards.
