IPX7 - is that waterproof?
Smartphones or smartwatches are often certified with IPX7. We explain what the abbreviation means and whether your device is waterproof.
IPX7 - Waterproof according to the protection class standard
Devices with IPX7 are considered to be partially watertight. A more detailed explanation:
- The abbreviation IPXX describes the degree of protection of electrical equipment.
- The first X-digit makes statements about dust protection. The values usually range from 0 to 6. The higher the value, the more resistant the device. If the information is not relevant or checked, the "X" simply stops.
- The second X-digit describes the protection against water. The values range from 0 to 9. At level 7, the smartphone should withstand temporary immersion according to the standard description. The device can only tolerate permanent contact with water at level 8.
- You should be able to wear a smartwatch with IPX7 such as the Apple Watch when showering, but you should not expect it to take longer dives.
- The manufacturers are responsible for the classifications themselves, an independent test does not take place. If in doubt, you should tend towards caution.
