Use IRC via proxy - how it works
Using IRC through a proxy so that you can cover up your identity in the best possible way is now very easy to implement. We show you how it works.
Use the IRC client mIRC
We recommend you mIRC because you already have a built-in option to use a proxy server with this program. You get the software as a 30-day trial version from CHIP.
What you should know about DCC and servers
First of all, you should find out whether the proxy server you selected supports DCC. With a direct client-to-client connection, you have the option of connecting directly to a chat partner, for example if you want to have a private conversation.
- Tip: If your proxy server cannot act as an intermediary using DCC, you should note that your chat partner can find out your unencrypted IP address using the NETSTAT command.
- Select the option that applies to you in the "Proxy" tab under "Connection".
Enter the additional connection data
In the last step you need the information which protocol your proxy server supports (mIRC offers Socks4, Socks5 and HTTP), its exact network address and the port. If your network server requires a user name and password, you can also optionally specify this.
- Chances are, you'll have to try multiple proxy addresses if you're using a public server. Many IRC networks use technical checking mechanisms to prevent proxy users from entering.
- Tip: In order to chat anonymously and connect as comfortably as possible, a so-called bouncer may be worthwhile for you. It acts as a permanent proxy that only you can use.
These instructions were created with mIRC version 7.32. In another practical tip, we will show you what you need proxy servers for and what advantages they bring you.
