IrfanView: compress images - how it works

If you want to compress images with IrfanView, this works in two different ways. In this practical tip, we will introduce you to both options.

If you want to convert a single image without much effort, you will find the appropriate instructions here. If you want to compress several images at once and want more settings, read on in the next paragraph.
- Open the picture with IrfanView and click on "Change size" in the menu bar under "Picture".
- The current size of the image in pixels now appears at the top. Activate the "Proportional" option so that the aspect ratio of your photo is preserved.
- On the left you can give the image a certain size or reduce the photo by a percentage.
- On the right side you will find predefined standard sizes. If you decide on a size there, the image will be adapted to the format as best as possible.
- You can apply the change by clicking the "OK" button. You can then save the scaled image in a new file or simply overwrite the old image.
IrfanView: Compress images for advanced users
- Open the image with IrfanView and select "Batch (batch) conversion / renaming" under "File" in the upper left corner.
- Activate the option "Special options active" at the top left and click on the "Set" button.
- Here you can change the size as in the instructions above. In addition, you will find other settings for your photo that you can adjust as you wish.
- Close the window with "OK" and click on the "Start" button. The image is now compressed.
- Tip: If you select several pictures at the top right, you can compress several photos in one go.
