iTunes: Select dynamic lists according to rules
With iTunes, you can manage your music by selecting tracks by rules and automatically adding them to smart playlists. So you don't have to read the songs for your playlists by hand. All titles that meet the criteria you set are automatically put together in a dynamic list. You can read how to do this in this practical tip.
Create smart playlists in iTunes
Smart playlists in iTunes can make your life easier. Especially if you have a fast growing media library, you can save a lot of time with these dynamic lists. That's how it works:
- In the »File« menu, select »New« and then »Intelligent playlist ...«.
- In the dialog box, you now decide which content criteria should be used to select the titles for your new dynamic playlist.
- In the drop-down menu on the left, choose a category like "Artist", "Genre", "Duration" or "Rating".
- In the middle drop-down menu you choose a logical link like "contains", "corresponds" or "is greater than".
- In the drop-down on the far right, you can now specify the value with which iTunes should compare your media library. This can be, for example, the name of an artist or the rating of a song.
- To define further criteria, click on the small [+] symbol on the right side of the column.
- Now decide in the drop-down menu at the top of the window whether a title must meet all or only one criterion in order to be included in your intelligent playlist. For example, you can create a list of all radio tracks that you have rated with at least three stars in iTunes.
- To ensure that iTunes always keeps your dynamic playlist up to date, check "Automatically update".
- You can also choose to only add tracks that you have checked in your library. If necessary, you can also define a maximum size for your playlist.
- After you have made all the settings, click OK.
- Now type in a name for your new dynamic list and confirm with the Enter key.
