Update Java - that's how it's done
If you use Java on your PC, the software should always be up to date. You can do this differently to update Java. We show you how it works.
Update Java via auto update
The easiest way to update Java is to use the Java auto update. As a rule, the software independently searches for updates. An icon in the notification area of the taskbar then indicates that an update is available. Click this icon to start the installation. You can also start the update manually at any time:
- To do this, open the Windows Control Panel and click on "Java". You may have to switch from the category display to the symbol display beforehand.
- Now switch to the "Security" tab and click on the "Update now" button at the bottom right. If a newer version of Java is available, you will receive a message and can install the update. Simply follow the on-screen instructions.
Update Java offline
Java can only be updated via automatic update if your computer is connected to the Internet. Alternatively, you can download and install the latest version of Java (on another PC).
- Make sure that you use the Java offline installer, as it does not require an active Internet connection during installation.
- You can download the offline installer from Chip (32-bit / 64-bit) and from Java.
We'll show you what you can do if the Java update aborts during the installation in the next practical tip.
