Not only expensive image editing programs can convert JPG images into vector graphics. We show you how this works for free in this guide.
Instructions: Convert JPG to vector graphics
In this guide we use the free Inkscape program. Numerous paid programs such as Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator can also create vector graphics. If available, you can also create a vector graphic using Photoshop.
- Click on the "File" menu item in the top left of the window and select the "Open" option. Now select the desired JPG image.
- Then a small window opens. Select the "Link" option here and confirm with "OK".
- Select the image with the mouse and click on the "Vectorize bitmap" option at the top under the "Path" category.
- You can make various settings here. Under the "Mode" tab, you can select, for example, the criteria used to form the vectors.
- With the button "Refresh" you get a small preview of the result. Click the "OK" button to start the process.
- The vector graphic can be saved in EPS format, among other things.
What is a vector file anyway?
Most of the images are so-called raster graphics.
- Files with the extensions JPG, PNG and Co. are raster graphics.
- Raster graphics consist of individual dots, which are arranged next to each other in a raster, the so-called pixels. The more pixels an image has, the sharper it is.
- If you zoom into the image, the individual pixels will become visible sooner or later. This phenomenon does not occur with a vector graphic, however, here you can theoretically zoom in indefinitely without the image becoming blurred.
- This is because the vector graphic does not consist of individual dots (pixels), but of information. If you create a black circle as raster graphics, each pixel consists of a fixed black point. In a vector graphic, each pixel also has information about where the center is and how large the diameter is.
- This allows the vector graphic to be scaled as desired, you can zoom in infinitely without the image becoming blurred. If you zoom into the raster graphics, the image becomes blurred at a certain point at the edges.
- You can usually recognize a vector graphic by the file extension. The formats .eps, .svg and .ai are used most often.
