Itching on the anus: possible causes
An itch on the anus is particularly uncomfortable. Knowing the causes is the first step towards healing.
- The most common reason for an itch on the anus is hemorrhoids . These are pathologically enlarged vascular networks, which are located at the end of the rectum.
- These occur when the skin around the intestinal exit is irritated by too much fluid, such as stool lubrication. Anal eczema can also develop here. These eczema are inflammatory and often burn much more.

- Bowel disease or fecal incontinence are other possible causes of itching on the anus. Because frequent bowel movements and increased wiping irritate the fine skin around the intestinal exit. Anal eczema can develop quickly.
- Internal diseases such as diabetes mellitus, a thyroid disease or chronic renal failure sometimes have an itchy anus as an accompanying symptom.
- Infections are also a common cause of Puritis Ani. Because in such cases the immune system is weakened and the ordinary yeast Candida albicans can then affect the anus. Genital warts are also possible reasons for Puritus Ani.
- In addition to these medical causes, there is also a mechanical one. Poor hygiene with residual sweat or even stool residues in the anal region quickly trigger an itch on the anus.
Itchy anus: possible treatments
Since the causes are quite different - infections, hygiene, diseases - the treatments are also very different.
- It is important that if you experience prolonged itching, you should see a doctor to rule out or treat potentially serious diseases of the intestine, your metabolism, or your kidneys.
- If it's just hemorrhoids, genital warts, or anal eczema, your doctor will prescribe an anti-inflammatory cream. The symptom of itching can be alleviated with lukewarm sitting baths.
- Also pay attention to proper hygiene. This should be done carefully but carefully. Soft toilet paper is ideal for this and rinsing with pure water. However, you should avoid moist toilet paper, because it contains skin-irritating substances.
