The most well-known technology for wireless charging of your smartphone is Qi, which means life energy in Chinese. Qi is compatible with many devices and even allows multiple devices to be charged at the same time. You can find out exactly how the charging process works here.
This is how wireless charging works
The technology behind charging without cables is simply explained.
- Unfortunately, it is not possible to do without a cable, as the charging station must be connected to a socket using a cable. However, the transfer to the smartphone works without a cable.
- To charge your device, you only need to place it on the support surface.
- The electricity required for charging is generated by a small magnetic field that is generated by a coil in the charging station. AC current flows through the coil. Since your device also contains a coil, there is an energy transfer when it comes into contact with the magnetic field.
- The charging station sends signals to the smartphone to check whether electricity is still needed. If this is not the case, the energy transfer is reduced to a minimum.
The advantages of inductive charging
Charging without cables offers you some advantages over conventional charging with cables.
- So you just have to hang up your smartphone or device and no longer have any knotted cables or mess.
- This way, the cables and the smartphone will not break so quickly.
- Although there are many different smartphone manufacturers, they all have the same standard and almost everyone uses this technology. However, as a consumer, it should be noted that the newer models in particular can offer the option of wireless charging. With Apple it is possible, for example, from the iPhone 8, with Samsung from the Galaxy S6.
- Depending on the charger, you can even charge several devices at the same time.
- In addition, you can not only charge your smartphone, but also Bluetooth headphones, smartwatches, tablets and drones.
Disadvantages of wireless charging
Despite the many advantages, there are also some disadvantages to keep in mind. These may affect your decision to buy a charging station.
- Older smartphones first have to be retrofitted with special accessories such as adhesive pads or covers. Otherwise you cannot use this technology.
- Many chargers are very sensitive, which is why you have to remove the cover of your smartphone.
- The device must lie exactly on the charger and must not be moved. If you still want to use your smartphone to a limited extent, you can buy a charger, which charges your mobile phone upright.
- Up to now, wireless charging has been slower compared to charging cables.
