The right coffee in moderation is healthy
There is hardly any other food that has as many health rumors as coffee. For a long time it was considered nerve-damaging and therefore unhealthy. In the meantime, there are numerous findings that suggest the opposite.
- The most controversial substance of coffee is caffeine. It wakes you up and increases your concentration. It can also stimulate metabolism and digestion. However, some people also make coffee nervous and take their sleep away. If you tend to, you shouldn't consume too much cups of coffee.
- A tip: try to drink espresso instead of coffee. Due to the longer roasting time and the more pressure-intensive preparation, espresso absorbs many flavors. So you simply drink less from the espresso. A cup of espresso (25 ml) therefore has less caffeine than a cup of filter coffee (150 ml). Espresso is also more beneficial for the stomach.
- Caffeine also stimulates dopamine production in the brain. Dopamine is popularly known as the happiness hormone. Coffee can thus improve our mental state. It is believed that the increased dopamine production also leads to further positive effects on health. A large-scale study from 2005 showed that caffeine can reduce or at least delay the risk of developing diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Some studies also suggest an antidepressant effect.
- Further studies, mostly from the USA and Canada, suggest that coffee consumption can minimize the risk of developing various types of cancer. The antioxidants it contains are responsible. Health researchers such as the renowned Glasgow medical doctor Naveed Sattar, however, warn against hasty conclusions. Although "observing correlations" can be interpreted as causes, "observing studies" are not precise enough. However, the thesis that coffee causes cancer is now disproved.
- In contrast, the antioxidants in coffee improve cell protection. German scientists found that a daily consumption of three to four cups of coffee can reduce oxidative DNA damage by up to forty percent and thus strengthen cell protection. The researchers attribute many positive effects of coffee to this fact. Healthy cells are the basis of a healthy body because they provide energy, cell structure renewal and metabolism.
- The intense and complex taste of espresso, cappuccino and Co. is ensured by the more than 800 aroma substances that can be found in coffee. At the same time, the drink contains black, so without milk and sugar there are no calories. A coffee is therefore ideal as a stimulating pleasure in between - even for athletes or people on a diet.
- Note that despite the health benefits, you shouldn't drink more than five cups a day. Because even an ordinary coffee drinker can make a high level of caffeine nervous. In addition, caffeine as a psychoactive substance can also be addictive.
