Can I also pay with an EC card at the toll booth? You have to know that
If you are traveling abroad by car, you have to pay toll fees in most countries. In this practical tip, we will tell you whether this also works with the EC card.
Pay toll with EC card: is that possible?
In almost all European countries you pay a toll fee for the motorways. Depending on the country, you pay a flat rate for a certain number of days or only for the distance traveled. You can calculate the toll charges before you start your trip. In another practical tip, we will introduce you to the best online toll calculator.
- Locals can easily pay using digital services such as Telepass. The license plate is scanned or there is a small transmitter in the car. The fees will then be debited from the account.
- Foreigners have to pay the toll in another way. You can pay in cash at any toll booth. Bills and coins are always accepted.
- Credit cards are also generally accepted. To do this, insert the ticket into the machine and then insert the credit card. After a few seconds, the amount is paid, without a PIN and without a signature.
- You cannot pay the toll in every country with the EC card. For example, EC cards are also accepted at Italian toll booths, but not in France.
- Make sure you choose the correct lane on the highway. Above the respective lanes, it is always shown whether you can pay by credit card, cash or by telepass. You will only find traces at a few toll booths, where payment by EC card is also possible.
- The situation is different in countries where you pay the toll by vignette. You can get these at every motorway service station in Austria, for example. If you are in a euro country, there are no fees for paying by EC card.
Although there are vignettes in Austria, you have to pay a separate route toll for some routes. We show where this is the case on the next page.
