Store potatoes: this is how they last the longest
Potatoes last the longest if you store them properly. This increases the shelf life of the potato by several weeks. You should definitely watch out for germinating and rotting potatoes. In this article we have summarized how the storage works best.
Store potatoes: a cool cellar extends their shelf life
Potatoes should be stored properly for a long period of time. Incorrect storage creates pressure points and can lead to germs. You can stop it if you follow a few tips:
- Above all, the potato should be stored dark, cool and dry. A dry air circulation increases the preservation process. Dark, dry rooms leave the potato little chance for germs to grow.
- Ideally, you create such conditions in your basement. It is worthwhile here if you get a special potato crate.
- If storage in the basement is not possible, use a bag or sack for storage. It is important with the bag that it is breathable. The potato must not "sweat".
- If you have made a place for storage, you should turn the potatoes about once a week. You can discover any rotten spots. In addition, the potatoes remain loose due to the rotation, which reduces the risk of pressure points.
4 Errors when storing potatoes
The living area is not suitable for storage. On the one hand it is too warm, on the other hand the air humidity in living rooms is usually far higher than in the basement. 4 common mistakes when storing potatoes:
- You should avoid damp and warm rooms because potatoes germinate there quickly. This can produce toxic solanine. It is therefore questionable whether you can still eat germinating potatoes.
- Under no circumstances should you lay potatoes along with other vegetables or fruits that produce ethylene. These include, for example, pears and apples. The plant growth substance ethylene accelerates the process of ripening.
- The actually robust potato must not be stored too cold. The storage temperature should not fall below four degrees. From this temperature on, the potato starch turns into sugar.
- The bottom itself is also not the right place to store the potatoes, as there is no adequate air circulation. A little tip here: If you put a few pieces of batten or an old pallet on the floor, this effect is prevented and floor storage is possible.
