Peeling potatoes: the best tips and tricks
Peeling potatoes is easy. With our tips you can quickly enjoy the yellow tuber - the favorite vegetable of the Germans.
Peel raw potatoes
If you want to peel raw potatoes, there are basically two options: peeler or knife.
- If the potatoes are very dirty, you should wash them before peeling them. Then pat them a little dry so they don't slip out of your hand.
- You can peel potatoes quickly and easily with a peeler. If you pull it over the tuber with light pressure, remove only the top layer.
- First peel the long sides of the potato and then the ends. Then you can wash the potatoes again.
- You should remove brown spots, so-called eyes, generously. Some peelers have a small knife on the side.
- If you'd rather use a knife, it should be a knife with a short, curved blade.
- Carefully scrape off the bowl with the knife blade. Be careful not to remove too much of the potato itself.
- You should only clean your peeler and knife by hand and not in the dishwasher so that the blades stay sharp.
Alternative to peeling: simply peel potatoes
You can peel jacket potatoes even more easily.
- Wash the potatoes thoroughly. Carve the bowl around with a knife. Make sure that you only catch the skin and not cut it into the potato.
- Then boil the jacket potatoes. Then get them out of the water and chill them in cold water for at least 10 seconds.
- Now you can simply pull off both halves of the shell. In the case of bulky potatoes, you may have to rework small areas with a knife.
