If your Android smartphone stops producing sound, there can be several reasons. In this tip we show you the most common causes and solutions.
No sound: the most common causes in Android
- Android doesn't just have a volume control. Instead, the volume for the ringtone, media playback, alarm clock and notifications can be set separately.
- Often the cell phone is set silently or too quietly with one of these controls. This is not so noticeable because the notification bar only shows an icon. To change the volume of media such as games or music, play any piece of music and press the volume buttons on your smartphone. It also works with videos or games.
- Alternatively, you can find exact settings in the "Tones" by first opening the "Settings" and then selecting "Tones". Make sure that none of the volume controls are pulled all the way to the left.
- If your cell phone is set loud enough, check whether there should be any sound at all. Sometimes, for example, the music of a game has been turned off accidentally, because many apps have their own volume settings and can be switched off individually.
- It can also be a bug in Android. Restart your smartphone, in many cases this will solve the problem. If this does not work, you can also restart your smartphone as a test with the headphones connected.
- An app you recently installed may also have caused the error. Therefore, remove all apps that you have installed since the problem occurred and then restart your smartphone.
- In rare cases, Android cannot properly switch between headphone output and speaker output. To fix the problem, play a longer audio file or music and connect headphones to your smartphone during playback. Wait a moment and remove the headphones.
- Even though it may sound strange, many users were able to solve the problem by temporarily removing the SD card from their smartphone. So remove your SD card and test whether the audio output works again afterwards.
- Make sure you have the latest version of Android installed on your smartphone. Therefore, check whether there is a new update.
- If the sound reproduction still does not work, the last solution is to reset your smartphone to the factory settings. Be sure to back up all important files beforehand. You can find out how to restore the factory settings in our complete instructions for smartphone reset and in the video below.
- If your cell phone still does not make any sound, there is probably a hardware defect. To fix this, you have to take your smartphone to the manufacturer for repair or to a workshop.
If the device volume is not enough for you, you can also stream the sound via Bluetooth speakers.
