License plate for e-scooters: you have to know that
Legislators would like to provide e-scooters with a license plate. We tell you what that means for you and your scooter.
License plate duty for e-scooters is imminent
Buy an e-scooter and start driving straight away. It won't be that easy in the future. This is because the law for personnel ight electrics vehicles (PLEV), which is due to be adopted in May 2019, provides for compulsory insurance and a license plate.
- You will soon be able to use your e-scooter legally on the road. With a few exceptions, you are only allowed to ride on bike paths.
- The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) provides for a license plate obligation, as is common for cars or motorcycles.
- This includes compulsory insurance and a license plate in the form of a small sticker.
- The sign must be attached below the rear lights of your scooter. Even extra lighting for the license plate should be provided.
- If the draft law goes through as planned, the price for everything together will probably be 90 euros per year.
In our next post, we will explain what penalty you will face if you drive your e-scooter without a road license.
