Kindle Fire HDX vs. Kindle Paperwhite - a comparison
Kindle Fire HDX vs. Kindle Paperwhite: Tablet vs. eBook reader - that is the question. In our comparison of the two top Amazon devices, we give you the answer.
Kindle Fire HDX - a colorful tablet
Amazon's Kindle started out as a simple eBook reader. In the meantime, the Kindle Fire series also has full Android tablets. The Kindle Fire HDX is the current flagship, which offers even better graphics and a faster processor than many 7-inch tablets.
- Performance: The Kindle Fire HDX was launched in October 2013 and works with a 2.2 GHz Quadcore Snapdragon 800 processor. This makes the tablet more powerful than the Google Nexus Mini and the Apple iPad Mini.
- Display: Like the Nexus 7, the resolution is 1920x1200 (323ppi). The HDX adapts the color of each individual pixel to the lighting conditions so that you can use it outdoors in strong sunlight. In practice, however, this does not work quite as well as with the Paperwhite.
- Weight: The HDX weighs - depending on the model and configuration with WiFi or LTE - between 303 and 384 grams.
- Storage capacity: There are models with 16, 32 or 64 GB storage space that, unlike many other Android tablets, cannot be expanded.
- Price: The price of the Kindle Fire HDX at the time of testing was approx. 230 euros (16 GB + WLAN) and approx. 580 euros for the 64 GB version with 4G and LTE.
Kindle Paperwhite - the eBook reader in black and white
The current version of Kindle Paperwhite 2.0 has been on the market since the end of 2013, its predecessor since 2012. It is a classic 6-inch eBook reader and, unlike the Fire HDX, offers no color and no apps. But it scores with better reading comfort.
- Performance: With the Kindle Paperwhite you can easily read even in direct sunlight. It has integrated next-generation lighting and 212 ppi resolution. The processor is around 25% faster than the first Paperwhite model.
- Display: There are no SLRs on the screen. The Paperwhite has a very easy-to-read e-ink display with lighting.
- Weight: The Paperwhite weighs 206 grams.
- Storage capacity: The eBook reader has 2 GB of internal storage space. Around 1.25 GB of this is available for your e-books, which corresponds to around 1, 100 books. The storage space cannot be expanded here either.
- Price: The price of the Kindle Paperwhite at the time of testing is around 130 euros (with WiFi) and around 190 euros for the 3G model.
Conclusion: Every 'Kindl' has its Kindle
The "Paperwhite" is the newest and best pure eBook reader model. It also convinces with a very long battery life and knows how to "kindle" children and adults alike. If you already have a tablet and "only" are looking for a well-functioning eBook reader, you should go to Grab Kindle Paperwhite, but with the Tablet Fire HDX, the whole multimedia world opens up in a fairly good quality, albeit without memory expansion.
More than just eBooks: With the Kindle Fire HDX you can also use Amazon's new video-on-demand service Prime Instant Video.
