Amazon discounts a Kindle device if special offers are accepted in return. This practical tip shows you how to remove them.
Kindle Ads: Remove Special Offers - The Backgrounds
Amazon has been offering its Kindle devices cheaper for several years now.
- The user then has to accept advertisements.
- These are mostly Amazon offers for eBooks or price reductions for them.
- Before using the Kindles, you have to wipe away the advertising, which does not necessarily make it easier to use sleep covers.
- There are a total of three ways to remove these special offers without losing the device's warranty or using a jailbreak.
Kindle advertising: Remove special offers - variant 1
The first option is suitable for eReaders and Firetablets and cannot be undone.
- It's about having Amazon's ads removed.
- To do this, you simply contact customer support and make a compensation payment, against which the advertising will then be removed.
- However, it is often also possible to remove the advertising free of charge. For this purpose, you should simply ask customer service what it looks like for your device.
- The removal only applies to one device at a time. So if you have several Kindle devices, you have to remove the advertising on each one individually.
- Nevertheless, this is probably the easiest and - if you don't have to pay anything - the most convenient.
Kindle ads: remove special offers - option 2
Option two strictly separates the Kindle from the Amazon account, so that there is simply no advertising.
- As a result, sleep covers work without any problems and the Kindle also seems to use a little less power.
- In addition, you run no risk of accidentally sending usage data to Amazon.
- Still, there are some limitations when you disconnect your Kindle from your Amazon account.
- Above all, this means that your reading progress is no longer synchronized with other devices, you cannot look up any terms on Wikipedia, no dictionary can be used and, above all, you no longer have a shop connection and no cloud.
- This can be remedied by the "Caliber" program, which allows you to read eBooks from other shops on your Kindle.
- There are a few steps you need to take to disconnect your Kindle from Amazon.
- First of all, it is essential to back up eBooks and dictionaries. Advantage here: By linking these to the serial number of the device, it should not be a problem afterwards to play the books on the device again.
- Connect your Kindle to the PC with a USB cable for backup. Then look for the "documents" entry in the context menu of the Kindles on your computer and copy the entire folder to the desktop.
- The Kindle must then be reset. To do this, call up the settings by pressing the menu button. In the settings, select the menu button again and go to "Reset device".
- Follow the on-screen instructions and set up your device after the restart until the Wi-Fi setup process is complete.
- Skip the setup of the WLAN by tapping on "Connect to WLAN" and close the message window that appears with the cross in the top right corner so that the option to cancel appears.
- Then select the item "Set up Kindle later" and confirm this in the message window by tapping "Set up later".
- Your Kindle should now be on the home page - half of the screen is still used for sign-in advertising. Therefore, switch the display to the "list view". The entire screen should now be available again.
- Finally, of course, the saved eBooks and dictionaries must be uploaded back to the Kindle. To do this, connect your eReader to the PC, copy the previously saved "documents" folder back to Kindle and separate it from your PC.
- Your Kindle should now be free of any special offers. However, this only applies until you reconnect the device to your Amazon account. In this case you have to repeat the whole process.
Kindle Ads: Remove Special Offers - Option 3
The third option that remains for you to remove the special offers on your Kindle uses the option of simply hiding the advertisements.
- With a little tweak you prevent the special offers from being saved on the device, which means that they are no longer displayed.
- However, this means that you still have to swipe the screen to activate it. In principle, the area on which advertising was previously displayed simply remains free.
- In addition, the Kindle is constantly trying to load new offers, so it has to use the WLAN and uses more battery.
- To prevent the advertisement from being displayed, you must connect the Kindle to the PC.
- You then switch to the "system" folder on Kindle and delete the contents of the "assets" and "mrch" folders there. Then write protect both folders so that no advertising can be reloaded.
- Finally, disconnect your Kindle from the PC. After a restart, the space is still free instead of advertising. After a firmware update, however, it is necessary to repeat the steps.
