Kindle "X-Ray: Enabled" - What Does It Mean?
There is nothing medical about X-Ray on Amazon Kindle. If you have activated X-Ray on your Kindle, you can search through the contents of your eBook. Find out how it's done here.
How to activate and use the X-Ray function on your Kindle
You can find out whether an eBook has an X-Ray connection in the respective Amazon product information.
- While reading, tap the top of the screen. A menu appears.
- If your eBook supports the X-Ray function, you can click "X-Ray" in the middle. Otherwise the function is grayed out or does not appear at all, as is the case with many German books.
- Now you can select different search criteria.
- You restrict the search area to "Page", "Chapter" or "Book". First you see the people on the current page, each with a bar that shows how often and where they appear in the book. The 'Book' tab gives an overview of the entire eBook.
- "People" or "Terms" lets you search for specific predefined keywords or names. Unfortunately, you cannot enter them freely, you have to choose from the list presented.
- For each person or search term you will receive a list of the mentions and citations in your eBook, as well as excerpts from the associated Wikipedia entries, if one is available for the respective term.
The context service X-Ray for Kindle was introduced in the USA in 2011. In Germany, the service was only integrated by Amazon at the end of 2013. This practical tip shows you how the Kindle Paperwhite 2 performs in the Stiftung Warentest test.
