Prevent plain text password display in Internet Explorer 10
As of version 10 of Internet Explorer, a symbol is displayed next to password entry fields with which you can briefly see the password just entered in plain text. If you want to switch this off completely, you can do this with an additional entry in the registry.
Prevent plain text passwords using the registry
- To do this, switch to desktop view in Windows 8 and press the key combination [Windows] + [R]. In Windows 7, open the search field from the Start menu.
- Enter "regedit", press Enter and confirm the question of user account control with "Yes".
- Navigate to the key "HKEY_CUR RENT_USER \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main". If the last key or keys do not yet exist, create them first with the command »Edit | New | Key".
- Then click in the right part of the window and open the command »Edit | New | DWORD value ". Overwrite the suggested name with "DisablePasswordReveal" and press Enter.
- Now open the new entry for editing by double-clicking it, set its "Value" to "1" and confirm this by clicking "OK".
- Finally, close the registry and restart the computer. In future, passwords will no longer be visible when typing.
