Connect the coaxial cable correctly - how it works
Coaxial cables are widely used cables that are used for transmission. This practical tip shows you how to connect them correctly.
Connect coaxial cables - that's what you need
- The first thing to do is to find out which coaxial cable you are using. This is usually on the insulation. Common sizes are RG-6 and RG-59.
- Then you should find out which connector is used on your device. So-called F plugs are common, but there are also N plugs. Make sure that you have the right size when buying. There are also screwed plugs and crimp plugs. Screwed connectors are easier to attach, while crimp connectors often provide better signal quality.
Connect the coaxial cable with a screw connector - how it works
- First remove the insulation from the ends of the coaxial cable. To do this, scratch the insulation layer about 1.5 cm before the end and then pull the insulation off the cable. Be careful not to damage the fibers in the cable. Alternatively, you can use insulation pliers.
- Now pull back the metal braid. Make sure that the outer fibers and the wire in the middle do not touch.
- Now cut back the plastic sleeve of the cable core. Be careful not to damage the wire in the middle.
- Then cut away the thin shielding film and pull the connector back until the core of the coaxial cable protrudes through the connector.
- Now all you have to do is screw the screw connector into the cable end. The turn cuts into the sheathing of the cable and is therefore tight.
Connect the coaxial cable with a crimp connector
- First run the crimp ring over the end of the coaxial cable and cut back the rubber insulation of the cable by about 6 mm.
- Cut half of the stripped cable so that only the inner copper wire remains. But be careful not to damage it, as this can have a negative impact on the signal quality.
- Now run the connector over the cable so that the inner copper fiber protrudes from the center.
- Push the connector towards the end of the cable so that the crimp ring connects the insulation and the connector. Now press the crimp ring together with pliers. The best way to do this is with crimping pliers.
- Finally, cut away the loose wires that protrude between the crimp ring and the connector.
