Removing scratches in car paint: the best tips
Small scratches on the car are annoying, but can be covered with simple means. Sometimes you can save yourself the expensive way to the painter. We'll show you the right tips to remove the car scratches - and what advice you shouldn't follow - here.
Remove scratches on the car with toothpaste
Toothpaste not only makes your teeth shine, but can also give your car paint a new shine. This is ensured by the tiny abrasive particles in the toothpaste that sit in the scratch and thus correct it.
- In almost every toothpaste - as for example here at Amazon - there are the abrasive particles.
- To remove the scratch, you now need a damp cloth with which you rub the toothpaste onto the car paint.
- Gradually remove the defect in addition to the toothpaste applied.
- If the damage is still there, repeat the procedure again with a little more toothpaste.
Fine grinding paste against scratches in car paint
Special fine grinding pastes are usually helpful in the fight against scratches in car paint. These work on the same principle as the toothpaste technique, but give the paint an additional seal and are also more durable.
- For example, you can get the grinding paste from the Westfalia tool company called "Hurricane" for around ten euros.
- In addition to the paste, you also need a sponge or cloth.
- Apply the grinding paste to the damaged area and rub the whole thing in a circular motion. However, pay attention to the additional information in the instructions for use.
- After that, the scratch is initially covered.
Paint pen hides car scratches in the paint
If you do not want to sand your paint with pastes, you can also repair the scratch with so-called paint pens - similar to nail polish.
- Make sure that you order the correct color for the touch-up pen. It is best if you not only order "black", for example, but look for the color code of your car and order the touch-up pen. Sometimes the car manufacturers themselves - for example Volkswagen - also offer their own touch-up pencils.
- You can then repair the scratch with a steady hand.
- A high-quality, well-applied touch-up stick usually survives even car washes a few times.
No-gos when removing damage in the paint
Quirky remedies are also recommended on some pages with which you can remove scratches in the paint. However, this is definitely not recommended. Here is a small collection:
- Never spray oil on the scratched area. While this removes the damage from black cars for now, it looks greasy on closer inspection and can lead to major problems later.
- Sometimes nail polish is also recommended as a remedy. However, if it is exposed to the heat on a hot summer day, it tends to form bubbles. In addition, the color usually does not match that of the car and the nail polish method is also not really durable.
- In addition, you shouldn't use an edding pen to mend a scratch. Doesn't look fancy, nor does this supposed trick last long.
Unfortunately, sometimes nothing helps. Then the way to the painter is the right one before you make the damage worse. If you don’t want to bother with your vehicle, we’ll show you the best tips to trade in your car.
