Credit card or giropay - which is safer?
If you can choose between a credit card and giropay when shopping online, you should always choose the safest option. We'll tell you which service provides more security.
Credit card and giropay in the security check
- Giropay: Payment via Giropay is just as secure as your online banking. For payment you will be redirected to a special website of your bank, where you log into your account and confirm the transaction with a TAN. Payments via giropay are only possible on approved and secure websites.
- Credit card: To pay with your credit card you need your card number, the expiry date and the security code. Since the transmission of data in online shops is encrypted, payment by credit card also generally proves to be secure. However, if you lose your credit card, anyone can take your identity and pay with the card as long as it has not been blocked. A credit card only becomes really secure when you set up the 3D Secure process.
Conclusion: credit card or giropay?
Payment with giropay connects you directly to your bank and is considered extremely secure. Payment by credit card, however, is only really secure with the 3D Secure process. Fraudulent shops can also query your credit card data without any major problems
