Crochet cuddly toy - a guide
If you want to crochet a cuddly toy, there are many different options. We will show you a guide that leaves space for your own ideas. For example, you can crochet a dog, cat, or bear.
Crochet cuddly toy: the color selection
To crochet a cuddly toy, you should first think about which colors your animal should have.
- Brown, black or white wool is suitable for a cat or dog. About 50 grams of wool are enough for a 10 centimeter soft toy.
- Of course, you can let your creativity run free and also use very colorful wool colors.
- Keep in mind that the arms or legs can have different colors than the rest of the body.
- In order to shape the mouth and eyes later, a rest of black wool or plastic eyes is suitable.
- You need filling cotton wool to fill your cuddly toy.
The body parts of the cuddly toy
Dog, cat or bear have one thing in common: they consist of a torso, a head, arms and legs. Start crocheting the head and torso.
- Round 1 crochet a thread ring. Crochet six single crochets in the ring.
- Round 2 Double every stitch in this round. In the end you get twelve single crochets.
- Round 3 In the third round, only every second stitch is doubled until you have worked 18 single crochets.
- Round 4 Now every following third stitch is doubled. Round 4 has 24 single crochets at the end if you have done everything correctly.
- Round 5 Now every fourth stitch is doubled. You will end up with 30 stitches.
- Round 6: Crochet two single crochets in every fifth stitch until you get 36 stitches.
- Rounds 7-10 To make the ball (later the trunk or head) large enough, crochet 36 single crochets for four rounds. From this step onwards you can slowly start stuffing with cotton wool.
- Round 11 The ball is gradually reduced again by removing stitches together. Every fifth and sixth stitch is decreased together. You get 30 stitches.
- Round 12 The fourth and fifth stitch are worked together. This should result in 24 stitches.
- Rounds 13 and 14 In round 13 the third and fourth stitches are worked together and in round 14 every second and third stitch. Your ball should now have twelve stitches in the last round.
- Round 15 A round of slip stitches closes your completely stuffed ball.
- Repeat all the steps for crocheting the head. A ball then represents the trunk of your cuddly toy and one the head. It is possible to crochet more rounds with 36 stitches (look at rounds 7-10 again) to get a longer body.
- When crocheting the head, don't forget to attach the plastic eyes before closing it with slip stitches. If you want to attach a mouth, you can do this with a few stitches using the knitting needle and black wool.
Crochet cozy arms and legs
The limbs of your cuddly toy consist of four "hoses" of the same size, for which you also each need a thread ring of wool. Repeat the following steps four times accordingly.
- Round 1 Start with a thread ring and crochet six single crochets in it.
- Round 2 Now every stitch is doubled. So you get twelve single crochets.
- Rounds 3-15 (or as you like) Continuously crochet twelve single crochets in each round. You can also vary the length of the arms and legs and crochet more or less rounds with twelve single crochets.
- Round 16 Before you start to decrease stitches, you should stuff your limbs. Then two stitches are decreased together, so that you get six stitches again.
- Round 17 Finish crocheting the arms / legs with a round slip stitch.
- Finally, you can sew arms, legs, head and torso together with the knitting needle and colored wool.
