Slow page load in IE: What can you do?
If an unusually slow page load occurs in Internet Explorer, this can have numerous causes. We present the most common problems and their solutions.
Solution: IE loads websites very slowly
- Speed test: Run a speed test to check if the problem is in the browser or the internet connection. You can read how this works in this practical tip. Switch between the browsers and use a LAN connection if necessary.
- Update browser: Always install the latest version of Internet Explorer to prevent compatibility problems with add-ons.
- Check add-ons: Start Internet Explorer without add-ons to check whether they are responsible for the slowdown. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 you can click the Windows button at the bottom left and enter "Internet Explorer" in the search line. The search results include "Internet Explorer (without add-ons)". If Internet Explorer is now running smoothly, an add-on is the cause.
- Remove add-ons: Click on the gear icon in the top right and select "Manage add-ons" from the menu. Here you can first deactivate the last updated or installed add-ons and restart Internet Explorer. If this does not work, deactivate all add-ons.
- Reset settings: Click on the gear icon in the top right corner and select the "Internet options". Under the "Advanced" tab you will find the "Reset" button. Check the box above (see picture) and click "Reset" again. Then restart the browser.
Further measures against slow page loading in IE
You should only take these measures if none of the options above have helped you.
- PC overloaded: Open the Task Manager by simultaneously pressing the "Ctrl" + "Shift" + "Esc" keys. Now see if your computer is very busy. To do this, close all open programs. Now search in the Task Manager for a program or service that requires a conspicuous amount of CPU or RAM. This could slow down the IE.
- Delete data: To really delete all user data of IE, you can use the CCleaner. You can also use this to check the registry for incorrect entries, if one should hinder Internet Explorer.
- Virus infestation: A virus may have nested in your system. Let your antivirus run a test. Also use the free Malwarebytes Anit malware program to scan your system.
- System recovery: If the IE was working properly a short time ago, you can reset the system to an earlier point in time. You can read how this works in this practical tip.
- Restore router: If the problem also occurs on other computers in your network, the problem is probably with the router. If the problem persists for a long time, you should reset the router to the factory settings. First carry out a backup, which you can restore if it fails.
