Using a laptop as a server - is that possible?
If you need a server in your network, you can also use your laptop for this. However, a notebook is generally not really suitable as a server - we will show you the reasons in this practical tip.
Use laptop as a server - you should take this into account
Basically, with the necessary knowledge, you can use your laptop as a server. However, we still advise against such use.
- The laptop is not designed for continuous operation as a server. It can happen that the battery suffers a defect because it is constantly connected to the power.
- As a result, the device crashes and can no longer be started. In the worst case, the battery overheats and catches fire.
- In addition, the hard drive would quickly refuse to work because the heat development is simply too high.
- The same applies to the laptop's CPU. The enormous heat development cannot be dissipated by the device due to the construction.
- Accordingly, the durability of the laptop would not be very high: It would "survive" for a maximum of 4-6 months - on hot summer days, this situation worsens even more.
We therefore recommend that you rent a web server. We will show you how to set up a web server in our next practical tip.
