There are a number of reasons why your laptop won't boot up. We present the most common problems and their solutions.
Possible sources of error for notebooks that no longer start
- The problem may be with the battery: remove it from the laptop (if possible) and then plug it back in. Also check if your power supply is still working. But be careful: Do not use any power supply other than your own to charge your computer. After many years of use or in the event of an overvoltage, the battery may fail to work.
- If the laptop starts, but the screen remains black, it may be a defective display or a faulty connection to the display. To check this, connect an external monitor to your laptop and restart it.
- If you hear beeps, they are sent from the BIOS. Use this list of BIOS beeps to find out what the computer wants to point out.
- If a part of the hardware that is necessary for the start is defective, it cannot be easily found on a laptop. In this case you need to have a specialist look it up.
Solutions when the laptop no longer starts up
- If the problem is with the hardware or software, you can try to start Windows in safe mode. Only the most necessary hardware and software is required. In this practical tip you can read how to start Windows in safe mode.
- If it is due to the Windows operating system, you can repair it by inserting the original Windows DVD. If you no longer have them, you can burn a recovery CD yourself. You can read how this works in this practical tip.
When nothing works: save data
If the solutions do not work, you should back up your data. If you entered the BIOS in the previous step, but were unable to start Windows, you may still be able to save your data using a free, small operating system that you must first burn to a CD.
- Download the free operating system "Knoppix" on another PC with CD / DVD drive. It is only 700 MB in size and therefore fits perfectly on a normal CD.
- Now the downloaded ISO file must be burned to an empty CD. If you have already installed burning software on your PC, you can use it. Here we briefly explain how to burn the CD with the CDBurnerXP.
- If "CDBurnerXP" is downloaded and installed, it starts automatically. Click on the "Burn ISO Image" button and in the new window on the "Browse" button. Select the downloaded ISO file. Finally, you can create the CD using the "Burn medium" button.
- Insert the CD into the laptop that no longer starts and start it up. "Knoppix" starts on its own. After about three to five minutes, you have an operating system that is relatively similar to Windows. You can now back up the data from your hard drive to a USB stick or an external hard drive.
