Connect laptop to TV via HDMI - how it works
If the laptop does get too small, it is a good idea to connect it to a television using an HDMI cable. This means that all content on the laptop can also be viewed comfortably from the sofa or with several people at the same time - regardless of whether it is a film, vacation photos or the Facebook feed.
Connect laptop to TV using HDMI cable
To connect your laptop to the TV, you obviously need a suitable cable. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cables are best suited for this. These transmit problem-free and fast high-resolution image and sound material.
- In another practical tip, we will show you what to look for when buying HDMI cables and how much money you have to spend.
- Basically, you can get a two-meter-long HDMI cable for around 6 euros on the Internet, which is quite sufficient for most purposes.
Laptop & TV: Connect via HDMI
You can connect the two devices to each other both when switched off and during operation.
- Connect the cable to the HDMI output of your laptop.
- Plug the other side of the cable into the HDMI input on your TV. If your TV has multiple inputs, note the number next to the input you have selected.
- Press the button on your remote control to select a source. In most cases this is named "Source".
- Now choose the right HDMI input. As a rule, the selection also shows you directly which input a device is connected to.
- Now right-click on your laptop desktop and select "Display Settings". In the settings that open, select "Duplicate this ad" in the dropdown menu and confirm with the "Apply" button. This means that the same content is displayed on the TV as on your laptop.
- If you want to watch a movie, it can also be helpful to select "Show only on 2" from the drop-down menu to switch off the laptop display.
- If no sound is transmitted on the television, it may also be necessary to right-click on the loudspeaker symbol in the task bar and then select the "Playback devices" item. Your television is displayed here. Select this and click on "As default" below.
