If your touchpad on the laptop stops working, there can be several reasons. We'll show you how to solve the problem and reactivate the touchpad.
Activate the touchpad using the key combination
- Every laptop can lock the touchpad with a key combination. You may have accidentally skipped here, which resulted in a lock.
- Look for an icon for the touchpad in the top row of buttons. This can also be crossed out. It is often located on the "F5" or "F6" key.
- Once you have found the key, hold it down together with the "Fn" key. The "Fn" key is located on the bottom left of the keyboard.
Activate the touchpad in the settings
If you were unable to activate the touchpad, you will need an external mouse for the next step, which you can connect to your laptop via USB.
- Open the Control Panel and click on the "Hardware and Sound" category. You can find out how to open the Control Panel in the video below.
- Above you will find the "Mouse" option under the "Devices and Printers" category.
- Under the "Device settings" tab you will find the touchpad in the "Devices" table.
- Click on the touchpad and switch it on using the "Activate" button.
- Your settings are saved by clicking on "OK". If you don't see the touchpad, follow the instructions in the next paragraph.
Touchpad does not work: Install driver
- Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time so that the "Run" command opens.
- Enter "devmgmt.msc" here and click the "OK" button. Then the Device Manager opens.
- Search for the category "Mice and other pointing devices" and open them.
- Right-click on the touchpad and select the "Update Driver Software" option.
- If that doesn't help, then select the "Uninstall" option. After restarting your computer, you can reinstall the driver in the same way.
- You may then need to follow the instructions in the previous paragraph again.

Defective touchpad: Is it worth repairing?
If our tips do not help, it is quite possible that your touchpad is defective. If the guarantee period has expired, you must consider whether a repair is still worthwhile. Suitable spare parts are often difficult to find, and the repair costs are sometimes very expensive. Especially with older models it is worthwhile to repair the costs with new notebooks - e.g. B. on Saturn - to compare.
- In many cases, however, a new laptop is a better investment. You can get strong notebooks for well under 500 euros. We have extensively tested the strongest devices in this price range for you and recorded the results in a leaderboard.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to switch off the touchpad automatically when you are away. If you need individual help to solve your problem, please contact the experts in the CHIP forum.
