Latex paint: these are the advantages and disadvantages
In addition to the usual wall paint, you can also use latex paint for renovation. This practical tip shows you the advantages and disadvantages of latex paint.
Latex paint: all advantages at a glance
In the meantime, real latex is no longer contained in the latex paints. Since latex is relatively expensive, cheaper binders such as synthetic resin are used. However, the properties are relatively similar.
- The latex paint is very elastic and therefore hard-wearing due to the synthetic resin content. Scrubbing off the paint is also much more difficult.
- Water and especially water vapor do not get through the latex paint. Nevertheless, the wall can breathe outwards, so that no mold develops.
- These properties are particularly in demand in the bathroom and kitchen. The abrasion-resistant paint can also pay off in stairwells.
These are the disadvantages of latex paint
- Latex paint is slightly more expensive than normal wall paint. The paint is not applied quite as thick, but it usually does not cover it as well.
- Latex colors are available in matt to high gloss. Note that even matte latex paint often has a certain sheen.
- If you want or need to paint over the paint after a few years, this is not easily possible with many latex paints. Above all, high-gloss latex paint must be roughened with sandpaper before painting.
- Some latex paints are still mixed with formaldehyde for preservation. It is best to buy a latex paint without formaldehyde. Otherwise, you should ensure adequate ventilation in the room during and after painting.
