You can change the drive letters for hard disks under Windows 7 and assign the letter "X" to a local data carrier, for example. You can do this in three steps using the Control Panel.
Windows computer management can be used to change drive letters
To change drive letters under Windows 7, you have to call up the "Computer Management". There are two ways to do this:
- Click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner and enter the following under "Search programs / files": "compmgmt.msc". The program of the same name is listed, which you open with a left click.
- Alternatively, you can find the computer management via the control panel. To do this, click on the Windows logo in the lower left corner and then on "Control Panel". In the search bar at the top right ("Search Control Panel") enter "Administrative Tools". Now select the first entry "Administration". Now double-click on "Computer Management".
Select the drive that should get a new letter
In the opened window you can see some options on the left such as "System" and "Device Manager". In order to change the drive letter of a hard disk, we need the "Disk Management".
- If the "Data Storage" tab in the left list is not yet open and the entry "Data Storage Management" is still hidden, double-click the "Data Storage" category with the left mouse button.
- Now click on "Disk Management" with the mouse. An overview with the connected data media opens on the right (see screenshot).
- Select the drive letter you want to change here. In the example picture this is the drive letter "C", the local disk for the Windows partition. Right-click on the desired letter with the mouse and select "Change drive letter and paths" (see screenshot).
Final step: Change the drive letter for the hard drive
In the newly opened window you can now specify the desired drive letter for the respective partition.
- Click on "Change" (see screenshot). A new sub-window with the title "Change drive letter or path" pops up.
- Here, after "Assign the following drive letter", select the desired letter in the dropdown menu.
- Finally, confirm your choice with "OK". The drive letter of your partition is now changed.
