Build speaker absorbers yourself - how it works
You can also build a loudspeaker absorber yourself. It ensures that the sound does not spread excessively across the floor. In this practical tip, we will explain how you can make such an absorber yourself.
Build loudspeaker absorbers yourself: you have to consider that
Before you start building a loudspeaker absorber, you should measure walls, ceilings and floors and perform acoustic empty space measurements. You can also use your smartphone to measure sound, for example the Android app Sound measurement or the iOS app Measure noise.
- Pay attention to the volume of the absorber. The thicker it is, the lower the frequencies are absorbed.
- Also note the cut of the room so that there are no room modes (standing waves). A corner absorber is recommended for small rooms.
- With side absorbers you dampen mids and highs.
Building loudspeaker absorbers: material
In the following step, the materials are only given roughly. How much construction tiling or fabric you need or how big the mineral wool and plywood panels have to be depends on the dimensions. It is best to use the acoustic calculator for the calculation.
- 4 roof battens
- 3 plates of mineral wool with a thickness of around 4 cm
- Tackernadeln
- upholstery nails
- 8 angles
- 24 screws
- 2 construction tile
- plywood
- Fabric by the meter (pattern and color as desired)
Build loudspeaker absorbers - how it works
- First you build a stable wooden frame. To do this, cut the four roof battens into your dimensions.
- Connect the roof battens to the angles. To do this, insert an angle between two roof battens and screw them tight with the screws.
- Now stretch the tile over the wooden frame.
- Attach the tile with the staple gun. Feel free to use a few more tacking needles to ensure that the tile is really tight.
- Fill the wooden frame from the other side with the mineral wool. At best, the frame should be completely filled with it.
- To make the speaker absorber look a little nicer, cover it with fabric on the front.
- Finally, cover the back of the absorber with the plywood panel.
